After Investigating Complaints Surrounding the Death of Keisha White, the NC Board of Nursing Concluded the Following:
- Former RN, Linda Brixon, engaged in conduct that endangers public health. Brixon was the primary nurse of Keisha White who was placed in restraints and ultimately died from lack of oxygen to the brain (anoxic brain injury).
- Brixon violated laws that govern the Boards disciplinary authority and WILLFULLY violated rules enacted by the Board.
- She failed to make available to another healthcare professional any information crucial to the safety of her patient’s healthcare.
- The Board determined that Linda Brixon neglected a patient who was in need of nursing care without arranging for continued care.
- It was also determined that she failed to maintain records of all pertinent healthcare information.
Failures
Assessment is an ongoing process that includes determining nursing care needs relevant to the status of a patient. These assessments include:
- taking into consideration the patient’s ability to care for self. . . FAIL
- initiating and delivering care according to the established plan. . . FAIL
- implementing medical orders in a safe environment. . . FAIL.
- prioritizing and performing nursing interventions. . . FAIL
- modifying interventions. . . FAIL
In other words, turn on the damn oxygen, connect the cardiac leads, and update medical personnel in charge. It’s quite clear why this document was mysteriously excluded from the evidence. The former DA Kimberly Robb may be responsible for that, but of course I can’t say what happened with any certainty.
Off Topic for a Minute
I need to stray a little bit here, because something else was done in the early hours of May 10, 2014. It’s not acknowledged in the BON’s disciplinary actions, because they could not prove it. But I believe the nurse is the only one guilty of it.
The cardiac monitor was silenced in the room, preventing alerts to family members that Keisha was in trouble, and Keisha was unable to communicate effectively. Then somewhere around 3:30 a.m., while no one else was in the room, someone physically entered and silenced the monitor again. This time it was silenced on the technician’s end.
How do we know this? Monitor strips were printed about every hour. They still showed O2 and heart rate readings from the meter on Keisha’s finger; then no more readings. This information was also verbally revealed to Mrs. Avens by the BON and later confirmed by DHHS. What do y’all think about that? Did the most evil nurse in the world do this?
At any rate, the monitor tech was no longer alerted that the patient was in trouble; as in more critical than she already was. The information, or lack thereof still went to the tech, but without audible warnings (if understood correctly). Do you remember the conflicting excuses Linda gave about the cardiac leads not being connected? ๐ It was mentioned in the previous post (to those who are new to the this website).
It Is Exactly What It Is
Looks like Brixon didn’t have to give any more excuses at this point. She, or somebody, (cough) found a way to get that worrisome monitor tech off her back. Can you say, “PREMEDITATION?” Sounds like First Degree Murder to me. But can it be proven?
Isn’t it strange that readers can call the nurse a murdering bitch in the comments, but I can’t call her one in this post?
Tell us what you think in the comments. It only takes a minute or two. Don’t forget to rate this post and SPREAD THE WORD to your social media pages. The courts may not have found her guilty yet, but the court of public opinion surely can. Thank you!
