What? Hearing Code Blue for Your Own Child?
In this video I share what it was like at the hospital during the night and early morning hours before Code Blue would be called at approximately 05:51 a.m. on May 10, 2014. My perception at the time was a gross misperception of what was really going on. Afterall, it is in my opinion that the stage was set for Keisha White to die and for me to not know any better.
When I say the stage was set, I mean in terms of what I saw vs what was really going on. My daughter, for example, had the nasal cannula at her nose, giving the perception that she was receiving her oxygen. The cardiac monitor had been silenced in the room, giving the perception that there was nothing wrong with her oxygen saturation, heart rate, or blood pressure. Tests were ordered by the nurse practitioner, but the one test that could have saved her had been cancelled; the ABG Arterial Blood Gas test.
Hell, yes!!! The damn stage was set.
Keisha showed signs of lack of oxygen to the brain even in front of me while in her room at Vidant Medical Center (renamed ECU Health Medical Center), but I’m not a nurse or a healthcare worker. I had no idea what those signs were at the time. Medical records described her as being confused and agitated, and I saw a person who was extremely hot who wanted to lay on the floor.
Little did I know she was feeling that way because her blood was filling up with carbon dioxide, because she wasn’t getting the (physician prescribed) oxygen.
Rather than give her the oxygen, the nurse (Linda Brixon) and the charge nurse (Monica Baker-Wilson) decided to put Keisha in restraints, a posey vest and bilateral wrist restraints, and tie her to the doggone bed. Seriously, can you imagine having to go through that yourself?
Like WTF? (Sigh!) And it’s these kind of facts that make this story so, so, SO freaking hard to tell, but I’m trying. I’m determined to push through, because whatever pain I feel now, is far less than what she felt then.
Watch the video for more of what happened before Code Blue was called.
